AKRON, Iowa | Brandi Davis went 3-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run and drove in four runs overall to back four shutout innings and lead top-ranked Akron-Westfield past 11th-ranked Remsen Union 7-0 Friday night in a Class 1A Region 1 semifinal.

Jaclyn Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Westerners (35-1) and Kayla Tindall was 2-for-2. Kim Schroeder took the loss for Remsen-Union.

Lady Westerners win regional opener – Le Mars Daily Sentinel

AKRON — The two-time defending state champions won their first playoff game of the season Thursday night 8-0 over Trinity Christian.

Akron-Westfield (34-1) cruised in the Class 1A Region 1 quarterfinal against Trinity (4-13).

The Lady Westerners led 2-0 after one inning and 3-0 after two. A-W added another run in the fourth inning before setting the final score with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Senior Brandi Davis pitched all seven innings and allowed just three hits. Davis struck out 13 Trinity batters and did not issue any walks.

Fellow senior Monica Harvey hit 3-for-4 with a double. Harvey scored two runs, had one RBI and one stolen base.

Junior Jaclyn Smith hit 2-for-3 with two runs, two stolen bases and a walk. Junior Katie Coyle finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base and an RBI. Freshman Kortney Hedlund was the team’s only other multi-hit batter. Hedlund went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Davis, sophomore Kayla Tindall and senior catcher Melissa Kroksh had one hit apiece. Tindall and junior Haley Coyle drew one walk each.

A-W will host Remsen-Union (18-7) in the regional semifinals Friday night at 7 p.m. The two teams last played on Tuesday, June 12 in Akron. The Lady Westerners eked out a 4-3 win in nine innings that night over the Lady Rockets.
